Past Webinar: Guidance for posted speed limit reductions in support of vision zero

Overview

Do posted speed limit reductions change driver behaviour and make roads safer?

SMATS Traffic Solutions and the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) partnered on a joint multi-city Canadian study exploring how posted speed limit reductions affect driver behaviour on municipal roads. Speed limit reductions are increasingly being adopted to support Vision Zero, but their safety impacts may not be uniform across roadway types and operating contexts. This research examines the conditions under which they deliver real safety benefits.

In this webinar we'll cover:

  • Observed changes in vehicle speeds following posted speed limit reductions
  • Where reduced limits may be effective on their own, and where additional measures may be needed
  • A practical framework to help assess whether a speed limit reduction is likely to be effective in a given context
  • A predictive statistical model to help estimate future collision risk using floating car and roadway data

This research was made possible through the generous support of Transport Canada through the Enhanced Road Safety Transfer Payment Program (ERSTPP). Complete the form to view the webinar.
