Utilising floating car data to provide ultimate alternative routes in real time
To minimize disruption during a short-term road rehabilitation on Lincoln Road—one of West Auckland’s busiest arterials—Ventia and Auckland Transport deployed SmartVMS: New Zealand’s first real-time, data-driven rerouting system. Powered by SMATS’ iNode platform and crowdsourced Floating Car Data, SmartVMS dynamically analyzed live travel times and vehicle speeds to guide drivers toward the fastest detours. The system gave motorists autonomy, reduced complaints, improved worker safety, and kept the project on time and within budget. Its flexible deployment and impact on traffic management earned praise from both the public and Auckland Transport.
