Reducing off-ramp queue wait times in real time

SMATS crowdsourced traffic data is helping Florida Department of Transportation monitor queue spillback and adjust ramp signals in real-time.

Overview

To combat off-ramp spillbacks and improve corridor safety, Florida DOT District 1 deployed SMATS’ iNode platform with real-time crowdsourced traffic data. Avoiding the cost and rigidity of traditional sensors, Florida Department of Transportation monitored over 50 roadway segments simultaneously, triggering instant alerts when congestion thresholds were reached. This enabled rapid signal adjustments—reducing queue times in minutes—and supported speed reduction studies without added infrastructure. The centralized, sensor-free solution allowed multiple teams to analyze travel time and speed data efficiently, helping improve safety, reduce crashes, and maintain mobility across Florida's high-traffic corridors.
