Enabling holistic intelligent city transportation management

Faced with growing congestion challenges, the City of Ottawa adopted SMATS Traffic Solutions’ iNode platform to modernize traffic monitoring. Using hardware-free, crowdsourced Floating Car Data, the city deployed over 80 virtual sensors to measure live travel times, assess construction impacts, and conduct before-and-after studies—without installing physical infrastructure. The data-driven approach enhanced decision-making across departments, enabled real-time traffic visibility, and supported signal retiming efforts. The solution’s cost-effectiveness, versatility, and remote accessibility made it a scalable tool for Ottawa’s intelligent transportation management.
