See how the City of Franklin used connected car data to analyze downtown cut-through traffic patterns in their historic downtown.
To evaluate the impact of a new bypass and reduce congestion in downtown Franklin, TN, the city partnered with SMATS and Wejo to analyze driver behavior using connected car data. Traditional methods lacked the accuracy and journey-level insights needed. Instead, SMATS’ iNode platform leveraged high-resolution trip data, including dwell times and engine on/off signals, to distinguish between destination and pass-through trips. Findings revealed that up to one-third of vehicles visited downtown for shopping or dining, while others were cut-through commuters. The insights enabled city staff to identify primary routes and propose data-driven countermeasures to alleviate congestion.
